One answer to these twin questions was proposed some years ago by H. Grice, who believes that what is said is often simpler than it seems. And he offers, in effect, a way to argue that it is wherever complexities may seem to be rearing their heads. Given the seriousness with which this offer has been taken up, and the relentlessness with which it has sometimes been applied, and given the resultant dismissal of phenomena better worried about, this chapter shows why Grice's suggestion cannot be correct.
